Measuring Your Business Success

Last week we reflected on your motivations for running a business, so this week we are reflecting on how you measure your success. Feeling satisfied at work is often about reflecting on your success and identifying what have done well to give you the boost and confidence to keep going. It's the information which fuels your motivation.

Measuring success is equally important for both you and your team, so it's worth doing this as a team exercise to identify what you have achieved and what you would like to achieve in the future.

Consider the following measurements of success and for those applicable to you, reflect on your past achievements and set suitable targets for them in the future?

  1. Financial - Have you met and set targets for an increase in your turnover, profit, and salary?
  2. Personal Profile - How many people come to you for advice as they see as an expert in a certain field?
  3. Company Profile - How many hits do you have on your website? How many client enquiries do you receive?  How much press coverage are you getting?
  4. Social and Environmental Impact - What are the outputs, outcomes and impact of your social and environmental products or services?
  5. Recognition - What are your levels of customer satisfaction? How many awards have you won?
  6. Competition - What is your current and prospective share of the market against your competition?
  7. Creativity - How many new ideas and innovations have you implemented into your range of new and existing products and services?
  8. Perfection - Have you refined and improved processes and systems so the business operates better?
  9. Performance - How many new clients have you won and retained? Have you achieved your desired sales targets?
  10. Employee Support - Have you supported, developed and rewarded your team?
  11. Family - Have you successfully balanced work and family life?
  12. Solutions - Have you found solutions to the challenges your clients or company are facing?
  13. Responsibility - Have you successfully led and project managed a team and business?
  14. Learning - Have you and your team continually developed new skills and knowledge?

and there are probably more to add......

Using these measurements of success will help you identify your success stories and unique selling points. This information can be used to create a confident sales pitch to tell people how well business is doing.
