Taming Your Gremlin
Taming Your Gremlin
Before you read any further grab yourself a pen and a piece of paper and maybe a nice cup of coffee and just take 5 minutes to answer this question.
What would you do if you had no fear?
Ok now off you go see what you come up with.
So what is on your list?
Interesting isn’t it? So often fear holds us back from doing those things we would really like for ourselves, the things that would make us feel truly alive.
Very often we don’t really believe we have a choice; it’s the circumstances of our life that control the outcome. It’s the job, its running a business, it’s the travelling for work, its not enough money, its lack of time and so the list goes on. Look at all the circumstances! And how often do we feel powerless to choose differently or to change. We limit ourselves until we are so driven by the circumstances that we no longer see what is possible. How many of us have gold medals in saying “I can’t”?
The truth is that there is no such thing as “have to”. There is only choice. We can choose differently, or we can own the choice in what we have without changing it!
For change to happen we have to do something different. If we keep on doing the same thing we are going to keep getting the same results.
In order to have the life we dream of we have to firstly make a decision and then go into action.
Seems so obvious doesn’t it so if it’s that simple what really stops us?
When we decide to make any change, an inner alarm goes off. We all have one, a gremlin, the saboteur, a little voice in your head, a feeling in our body, who has all the reasons ready for why this plan, whatever it is, is stupid, dangerous, will fail, will hurt someone or just won’t work. They can be very clever, carefully disguised in the voice of reason – “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side” it often tells us - BUT what if it was? What would we be missing?
Sound familiar? In the book, Taming Your Gremlin by Rick Carson he gives some excellent yet simple advice to tackle your self sabotaging voice.
The first step and is to simply notice. What does it look like? Does it have a name? When does it show up and what would you like to say to it?
The great news is that when we start to become aware of the gremlin we start to be sensitive to the fact that it doesn’t actually have a hold on us unless we choose it to.
So don’t let your gremlin hold you back. Focus on what you really want for yourself and remember you have a choice.
When you start to listen to the real you, you will find there is more inside you than you dare to think!
